Health Insurance - How Do I Choose A Plan?

With health insurance rates going up and with the plethora of benefits, different co-pays, etc, it seems impossible to get a handle on the market and the best plan. It is our hope that the following tips will help.

We offer coverage from the following companies:

  • Blue Cross / Blue Shield
  • Golden Rule
  • Humana
  • United Healthcare

To ensure that you receive the best coverage, follow these steps:

  1. Be certain of the quality of the Insurance Company: Look at the A.M. Best rating. We only Recommend companies that are A rated or higher.
  2. Be aware of pre-existing condition clauses that exist in all health insurance policies. Group Plans will guarantee to issue if there are 2 or more employees and will assume pre-existing conditions if you have been previously insured. Individual plans have no such provisions and underwrite on A case by case basis.
  3. Choose an agent or agency that has experience. Many times we meet people who bought a policy from a new agent that is no longer in the business. Business longevity means stability for you.
  4. Be certain your provider is in the "network". Most companies have made contracts with Providers hence "network". Benefits are enhanced for those in network and reduced for those out of network.
  5. Determine your risk tolerance: Since rates are tied to benefits decide how much risk you are willing to take. The higher the deductible the lower the rate. Check several plans to see how the rate is affected.
  6. Contact your physician and ask them how they like the company you are considering. There is nothing like hearing it "from the horses mouth". They deal with companies daily. We are proud to have many medical providers among our clientele.
